About Canada

Large distances and real winters, but also the most structured route from a study permit to permanent residence of anywhere we work. Toronto and Vancouver are expensive; Alberta, Manitoba and the Atlantic provinces are not.

The education system

  • Bachelor's: 4 years
  • Master's: 1 to 2 years
  • Grading: percentage or 4.0 GPA

Colleges are not a lesser option here. Diploma programmes at public colleges carry the same post-graduation work permit as a degree, at roughly half the tuition.

Co-op placements need a separate work permit, applied for with your study permit. Ask for it at the start, not later.

Plan your budget as though you will earn nothing in the first two months. Finding a job takes longer than anyone expects, and a visa officer will not accept part-time income as proof of funds either.

Applying to Canada

When to start

Work backwards from the intake month. Applications close roughly three months before, and the visa takes another six to twelve weeks after that. For a September intake, the sensible starting point is about six months earlier.
